Cross Enrollment

Cross Enrollment can provide enrolled SBCC students with the opportunity to enroll without formal admission to UCSB—in a maximum of one UCSB course per quarter on a space-available basis for $0 per unit.*  Cross-enrollment can provide an invaluable opportunity to expose students to the quarter system and the academic culture and expectations of the university environment before transfer. Continuation of the cross-enrollment program beyond the 2025-2026 academic year is contingent upon legislative approval.

Important Message
This webpage outlines two key areas:

UC TAG & Senior Standing (Effective Fall 2025 Admission and Beyond)

  • TAG eligibility and senior standing:
TAG does not apply to students approaching senior standing (defined as 80 or more UC-transferable semester units / 120 or more quarter units) completed at accredited four-year universities, or in combination with community college coursework.

  • Major preparation:
All students are strongly encouraged to select their major carefully and complete as much major preparation as possible prior to transfer.

Unit Limitations:

  • A maximum of 70 UC-transferable semester units (105 quarter units) of lower-division coursework from any college or university may be applied toward UC transfer. Courses taken beyond this limit will still receive subject credit.

  • Lower-division coursework completed at any UC campus (including UC Extension) does not count toward the 70-semester (105-quarter) unit cap. However, all transferable UC units apply toward the 80-semester (120-quarter) unit limit for TAG eligibility.

  • Upper-division coursework completed at any four-year university will count toward the 80-semester (120-quarter) unit limit for TAG eligibility.

Intersegmental Cross Enrollment Program

Enrollment Conditions

To participate in the program, students must follow these conditions:

  • Approval & Space Availability: Enrollment approval is valid only for the specified term and is subject to space, deadlines, registration procedures, and institutional priorities.

  • Course Limit: Students may enroll in one course per term (lab components may be taken with the lecture).

  • Course Restrictions: Pre-college level courses are not eligible.

  • Fees:

    • A non-refundable administrative fee (per-unit charge at the current California Community College rate) is payable to the host institution at the time of enrollment. Rates are subject to change.

    • Students are responsible for additional costs (e.g., lab, materials, printing, and textbooks).

  • Advising: Academic advising is available only through the student’s home institution. Students are strongly encouraged to confirm course applicability toward degree requirements with their home campus counselor.

  • Prerequisites: Students must provide proof of prerequisite completion (e.g., unofficial transcript or grade report).

  • Financial Aid: Available only through the home institution.

  • Health Services: Limited to emergency treatment at the host institution.

  • Student Services: Participants are not eligible for host institution student services (career services, recreation center, housing, athletics, etc.).

  • Parking & Access:

    • Parking is available for a fee through the host institution’s Parking Services.

    • An ACCESS card is required for library and printing services.

  • Technology Access: Approved students will receive instructions for setting up a UCSBnetID and UCSB Umail account, both required to access GauchoSpace (course materials).

  • Withdrawal Policy: Students must formally withdraw through the host institution’s Office of the Registrar if they stop attending. Otherwise, a failing grade will appear on their record.

  • Institutional Policies: Students are subject to all host institution rules, including the Student Conduct Code and course drop/change deadlines.

  • Disability Services: Students needing accommodations should contact UCSB’s Disabled Students Program at 805-893-2668.

UC TAG & Senior Standing (Effective Fall 2025 and Beyond)

  • TAG Eligibility and Senior Standing
TAG is not available to students who are approaching senior standing, defined as:

    • 80 or more UC-transferable semester units (120 or more quarter units) earned at accredited four-year universities, or

    • a combination of units from four-year universities and community colleges.

Students are encouraged to select their major carefully and complete as much major preparation as possible before transfer.

  • Unit Limitations

    • A maximum of 70 UC-transferable semester units (105 quarter units) of lower-division coursework from any institution will transfer to UC. Units beyond this limit earn subject credit only.

    • Lower-division coursework completed at a UC campus (including UC Extension) does not count toward the 70-unit cap, but all such units count toward the 80-unit TAG limit.

    • Upper-division coursework completed at a four-year university applies toward the 80-unit TAG limit.

  • UC GPA and Course Repetition

    • A grade of C– or lower in a UCSB course may jeopardize admission to any UC due to GPA deficiency.

    • Substandard grades earned at a UC can only be repeated at a UC. Repetition is limited to one attempt, either through the Intersegmental Cross Enrollment Program or UC Summer Session.

    • If the course is not required for major preparation, students may consider taking it Pass/No Pass.

  • Academic Success Tips

    • UCSB follows the quarter system, which is only 10 weeks long and moves quickly.

    • Students are strongly encouraged to use tutoring services and academic support whenever available.

Application Procedures

  1. Complete Student Certification

    • Please complete the student certification section of the application.

    • Once submitted, the form will be routed to your home campus for eligibility certification and then sent to your UCSB instructor for signature.

    • Please ensure the instructor’s email address is entered correctly.

    • An unofficial transcript may again be required to verify prerequisites.

    • A link will be emailed to you by UCSB’s Special Enrollment Coordinator.

    • The fee is nonrefundable, charged per unit at the current California Community College rate, and subject to change.

  4. Submit by UCSB’s Add Deadline

    • Applications will not be accepted after UCSB’s published add course deadline.

    • The UCSB cross-enrollment process is initiated at Santa Barbara City College.

    • An advising session with your academic counselor is strongly recommended before enrolling.
